New special also references Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
The decade since Prince William and Kate Middleton took their wedding vows has been eventful for the British royal family, to put it mildly.
Given recent developments largely fueled by Oprah Winfrey’s much-discussed interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, People Magazine has gotten more than it bargained for by co-developing two 2021 specials about the royals. The first, “Harry & Meghan’s American Dream,” aired last month on The CW; the second, “William & Kate’s Royal Anniversary,” debuts there Thursday, April 29.
While the new hour recalls all the pageantry of the wedding that grabbed the world’s attention 10 years ago, and traces William and Kate’s life together since — now encompassing their three children — it also references the family’s strife of late, which reportedly has seen relations strained between William and Harry. Still, the program takes a mainly celebratory tone toward the couple destined to become England’s rulers.
It isn’t coincidental People is launching a quarterly magazine devoted to the royals, and senior editor Michelle Tauber reasons that Americans’ interest in England’s first family “has never really waned. I think William and Kate’s wedding can be considered the start of this contemporary generation of royals that has really resonated with our readers.
“When William and Harry were bachelors, those years were quiet,” adds Tauber. “When William and Kate got engaged, it definitely picked up the current of interest in the family. Then, with the story of Harry and Meghan, it really ramped up in ways no one could have imagined.”
Though the focal subjects of “William & Kate’s Royal Anniversary” are obvious, Tauber allows it’s impossible to ignore how “intertwined” Harry and Meghan are with them.
Nevertheless, Tauber says, “I think we’ve been able to address William and Kate on their own, and the evolution of their partnership. Certainly with Harry and Meghan’s move to California, that has put a renewed spotlight on William and Kate. And the core of the storytelling for our readers and viewers is William as the future king and Kate as the future queen. That, of course, distinguishes them.”
