Today’s Top TV Picks – Saturday July 4

Today’s Top Picks – Happy 4th of July!!!

Independence Day

7 p.m. on AMC

Will Smith heads an all-star cast in this edge-of-your-seat 1996 sci-fi thriller about an alien armada on a mission to invade Earth. After much of mankind is destroyed, a band of survivors joins forces to repel the invaders and save the world. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film also stars Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Robert Loggia and Randy Quaid.

8 p.m. ET on HBO – Premiere

This 2019 combat epic about the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II, was a pet project of director Roland Emmerich, who struggled at first to find financing for a drama that called for flashy special effects and a large international ensemble cast. With a production budget of $100 million, it’s one of the most expensive independent films of all time. Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Woody Harrelson and Darren Criss are featured.

A Capitol Fourth

8 p.m. ET on PBS

For the fourth time, John Stamos returns as host of this annual holiday special, joined by co-host Vanessa Williams. This year’s program will feature clips from past editions of this show. Among the featured performers are Patti Labelle, country stars Trace Adkins and Lauren Alaina, the Temptations, Tony Award-winning Broadway star Kelli O’Hara and opera star Renée Fleming, among many others. The special also will include a tribute to workers on the front lines of the health crisis and a segment honoring African-American heroes from the past and present.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

10 p.m. ET on FX

On top of being an entertaining “popcorn movie” in its own right, this 2014 adventure also proved a dazzling display of Marvel Studios’ corporate synergy in action, since the story line simultaneously was being amplified by events playing out on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The powerful story of how “Cap” (Chris Evans) discovers his past has come back to haunt him is rewarding enough on its own terms. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan also star.
