Robbie Gibbons is among the ‘Castaways’

ABC series tests everyday people’s island survival skills

Robbie Gibbons of ‘Castaways’ Tuesday on ABC

Q: Though there was no guarantee that you would encounter any of the other “Castaways” while you were on an Indonesian chain of islands, how long did it take you to meet up with fellow participant Kenzi Whittington?

A: I want to say a couple of days. It wasn’t on the first day, but somewhere toward the end of the second day was the time frame when we crossed paths.

Q: You watched the Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away” on television the night before you started your own “Castaways” adventure. How did that impact you then?

A: It’s a great movie that didn’t involve a lot of dialogue, yet it was so strong and intense to watch that man’s journey. He had a reason why he was going to live, and the “how” of it became do-able. And he was able to make it.

Q: Did being involved in “Castaways” accomplish what you wanted it to?

A: It was a leap of faith, a very outside-the-box way of going about weight loss. I’m the guy who started a diet every Monday – then by Wednesday, I was like, “We’ll start again on Monday.” That was my life, and this put me in a situation where I had to step out of my comfort zone. It was not a weight-loss show, but for me, it was a transformation.

There were no personal trainers, but it was something that brought balance back into my life. Weight loss happens in the kitchen, but transformation happens in the mind … and every single day now, I know that I’m trying to get back to that balance. I was just out of whack, and I’m not saying that it’s great and wonderful now, but I know that I’m going to make it through the day. And we’re all just trying to do that, right?
