‘Only Murders in the Building’ – Martin, Short return for Season 2

More murder afoot in sophomore round

Steve Martin has often talked about the “instant comedy rapport” he had with Martin Short at the outset of their nearly four decades of working together. And that’s plainly evident this week when “Only Murders in the Building” returns for its second season.

Dropping Tuesday, June 28, on Hulu, the 10-episode sophomore round picks up minutes after the events of Season 1 and finds the shoe on the other foot for true crime podcaster pals Charles, Oliver and Mabel (Martin, Short, Selena Gomez) when they’re implicated in the death of Arconia board president Bunny Folger.

Soon, they find themselves the subjects of a competing podcast as well as a police investigation led by a detective played by Michael Rapaport (“Atypical”). Other guest stars this season include Shirley MacLaine, Cara Delevingne, Andrea Martin, Zoe Coletti and Amy Schumer playing a version of herself.

It’s just the latest in a laundry list of collaborations between Martin and Short, which include the following.

“Three Amigos!” (1986): It was panned by critics at the time, but director John Landis’ Western comedy about three unemployed silent film actors recruited by a Mexican village to help rid it of bandits marked the beginning of the Martin/Short friendship and working relationship. It’s also since become something of a cult classic.

“Father of the Bride” (1991): Martin played the paternal figure of the title in director Charles Shyer’s remake of the 1950 film comedy about a businessman who has great difficulty coming to grips with his daughter’s (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) impending nuptials. Short played it over the top as the eccentric French wedding coordinator whose price tag raises Dad’s blood pressure.

“Father of the Bride Part II” (1995): Shyer also directed this sequel in which Martin’s character has further cause for panic, this time as a result of the dual pregnancies of his daughter (Williams-Paisley) and his wife (Diane Keaton), the baby shower for whom is now being planned by Short’s loopy character.

“An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” (2018): This Netflix special filmed in Greenville, S.C., puts the Martin/Short relationship on full display as they trade quips, perform music and share stories from their long careers in comedy.
