Food Network and Cooking Channel celebrate Halloween with some boo!-tiful treat ideas


Halloween comes to Food Network and Cooking Channel

Unless you’ve been stranded on a South Pacific island a la Tom Hanks in “Cast Away,” you’re probably well aware by now that Halloween comes next week.

To get you in the proper state of culinary mind, Food Network and Cooking Channel have concocted a schedule rife with ideas for what to prepare and serve on or around the holiday. So sit back, turn on the TV and take in the tips, tricks and recipes that their experts have to offer.

Probably the most noteworthy entry on this week’s schedule comes up Monday, Oct. 21, on Cooking, when Carla Hall hosts the hourlong special “Trick or Eat,” in which the chef and author ventures to stops in Atlanta, New Orleans and Salem, Mass., to sample such tricked-out treats as zombie burgers, Franken-chops and freak shakes. Hard to say “boo!” to these options.

Also in the holiday mood is Guy Fieri, who on his Saturday, Oct. 26, episode of Food’s “Guy’s Ranch Kitchen,” invites in Amanda Freitag to prepare a red hot blood orange margarita with spicy cinnamon syrup and smoked, deep-fried chicken wings coated in hot sauce and pomegranate molasses; Marc Murphy to make orange-and-black caviar-covered deviled eggs and a cheesy risotto served in an acorn squash; and Christian Petroni for a tenderoni pizza with hot honey and a fire-roasted brococolini sprinkled with sweet and tart preserved lemon. Halloween eats have never been so upscale.

Also that afternoon on Food, Trisha Yearwood of “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” is taking on a Roaring Twenties look for her Ghoulish Gatsby Party, during which she will serve up such offerings as a festive fruit gelatin mold, crunchy fried olives, shrimp cocktail with dipping sauces, and spider web deviled eggs, all washed down with an apple champagne cocktail suitable for toasting. Cheers!

If competition shows are your thing, Food Network has you covered, starting with Monday’s penultimate episode of “Halloween Baking Championship,” in which the four remaining bakers are tasked with creating desserts with a grave-robber theme and sculpting a marbled tomb cake.

On the Sunday, Oct. 20, edition of “Halloween Wars,” the teams of three must create displays that show how holiday mascots like Santa and the Easter Bunny do trick-or-treating, with actor Jackson Rathbone (the “Twilight” movies) serving as a guest judge alongside regulars Shinmin Li and Todd Tucker.

And immediately following on “Haunted Gingerbread Showdown,” “The Mummy’s Ancient Curse” is in effect as host Clinton Kelly challenges three gingerbread artists to tell a story of mummies run amok. Without the odor, obviously.
