DVD Releases for the week of April 4, 2021

“Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar”

“BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR”: A relative hit on direct-to-consumer video recently, after the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of its planned theatrical release, this comedy reteams “Bridesmaids” colleagues Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (who also wrote the script) as very sheltered Midwestern friends who decide to embark on a grand adventure together in Florida. Once there, they get a lot more than they bargain for, since they’re targeted to be pawns in a nefarious scheme, Co-stars include Jamie Dornan, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Damon Wayans Jr, Vanessa Bayer and Fortune Feimster. DVD extras: three “making-of” documentaries; audio commentary by Wiig, Mumolo and director Josh Greenbaum; deleted scenes; outtakes. *** (PG-13:AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

FAMILY VIEWING GUIDE KEY: AS, adult situations; N, nudity; P, profanity; V, violence; GV, particularly graphic violence.

STARTING THIS WEEK (New releases):

“SHADOW IN THE CLOUD”: Chloe Grace Moretz has come a long way from her days as a child actress, as affirmed again by her leading role in this mix of action and horror that had a limited theatrical release. She plays a World War II officer generally dismissed by the crew of the transport on which she’s carrying vital military information. The situation doesn’t improve when she claims she saw a creature holding onto a wing of the plane — shades of a classic episode of “The Twilight Zone” — and she ultimately finds herself on her own in battling the supernatural, while enemy aircraft are determined to shoot the one she’s aboard out of the sky. Taylor John Smith, Nick Robinson (“Love, Simon”) and former “Hawaii Five-0” regular Beulah Koale also star. *** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

“ASSAULT ON VA-33”: The “VA” in the title actually does represent its common use for “Veterans Administration,” which has a hospital under siege in this action tale. Terrorists invade the site while a highly skilled ex-soldier (played by Sean Patrick Flanery) is there to meet one of the employees, his wife (Gina Holden) … and if you’ve seen “Die Hard” or any of its many variations, it’s not hard to figure out what happens next. Genre staple Mark Dacascos, Michael Jai White (“Tyson”), Abigail Hawk (“Blue Bloods”) and Weston Cage Coppola (son of Nicolas Cage) also are featured. ** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on On Demand)

“FIRST LADY: A MODERN FAIRYTALE”: Generally, an American president enters the White House with a first lady … but because of his own circumstances, the chief executive (Joel King) is in need of one in this comedy. A woman with some experience in diplomatic relations (played by “Matlock” aum Nancy Stafford) vies for the position, with a foreign official (Corbin Bernsen) serving as her sounding board. Stacey Dash also appears in writer-director Nina May’s tale. *** (PG: AS, P)

“OVERRIDE”: A mid-21st-century humanoid (played by Jess Impiazzi) rebels against her — or is that “its”? — existence in this sci-fi thriller, with some help from outside forces that want to use her to their own sinister ends. A hacker enlists the creation in abducting the U.S. vice president’s (Dean Cain) son, with the kidnapper’s highly advanced artificial intelligence making it a tough proposition to rescue the victim and bring matters to a safe conclusion. Originally made for television under the title “R.I.A.,” writer-director Richard Colton’s film also features Luke Goss, Amar Adatia and Kimberly Wyatt. ** (Not rated: AS, P, V)

“HALLMARK 2-MOVIE COLLECTION: LOVE ON HARBOR ISLAND/LOVE UNDER THE OLIVE TREE”: DVD releases of recently televised Hallmark Channel films continue with this combination that opens with the saga of an interior designer (played by Morgan Kohan) who leaves Seattle to return home, where she helps her aunt operate a bed-and-breakfast.  She also crosses paths with a hunky seaplane pilot (Marcus Rosner) who … well, guess. Then, Tori Anderson (“Blindspot”) and Benjamin Hendrickson (“Virgin River”) play descendants of long-warring ranch operators who … well, guess again. *** (Not rated: AS)

COMING SOON (Upcoming releases):

“Hemingway: A film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick”
