Fox-series alum rejoins former castmates in current sequel
Ian Ziering has a lot of new activity, but he’s also proving he’s not opposed to revisiting his past.
After recently following his “Sharknado” tenure on Syfy with “Zombie Tidal Wave” — as both star and producer — and having appeared in DC Universe’s “Swamp Thing,” he also has gone back to the franchise that brought him fame. In Fox’s Wednesday summer series “BH90210,” he plays a variation of himself and also reassumes his former series role as Steve Sanders.
“We’re all excited to be working together for these six episodes,” Ziering says. “There’s a lot of pressure to give the audience something they’ll love, and we’re not giving them exactly what they may be expecting. This is us playing ourselves through imaginary circumstances.”
Ziering notes that’s a tricky proposition, though fellow “Beverly Hills, 90210” alums Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling were very involved in developing the new show. He reasons the producers “really have to be respectful of the tone and the voice that they’re putting in our mouths. If it was Steve Sanders, it could be anything, but they’re playing around with our actual personas. We’ve had story meetings where there were objections, then others where we totally embraced what was going on.”
Noted by all on the “BH90210” set is the absence of the late Luke Perry, alias the original series’ Dylan. “He’s very missed,” Ziering confirms. “We weren’t just co-workers, Luke and I were very good friends. It continues to be difficult, and there are moments when we’re all together and take a pause to regain our composure. It’s tough. He was a big part of all of our lives.”
